The independently published Dutch Journal of Medicine (Nederlands Tijdschrift voor Geneeskunde) reaches more than 28,000 readers every week with clinically relevant articles. Founded in 1857, the journal attracts submissions in medicine and healthcare and applies a rigorous editorial and peer review process.
A key requirement for transitioning to online peer review was the ability to customize author-facing pages to include instructions and hints in Dutch, the native language of most of its contributing authors. The Web-based administration pages in Editorial Manager made this possible without the need for expensive customized software development. With the assistance of Aries’ support staff, the journal office was also able to successfully customize workflows, article types and user roles to reflect the journal’s local needs.
Following the live launch of the submission site on October 10, 2008, Inge de Boer (Project manager for the EM launch) commented, “We were very happy with the possibility to take part in the Gamma testing of EM 6.1. This enabled us to go live with the most up-to-date software, instead of having to update our site within two months of the initial launch. And of course, the Aries support staff has been extremely helpful throughout the process.”
