OA Week 2019: Efficient APC Processing Option with RightsLink® and EM/PM
With an increase in open access (OA) publishing in recent years, publishers may need to adjust their standard operations to properly manage this new business model and Article Processing Charges (APCs) revenue stream. In celebration of Open Access Week 2019, we’d like to highlight Aries’ decade long partnership with Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) dedicated to simplifying this process for both publishers and Authors.
The RightsLink® for Scientific Communications integration within Editorial Manager® (EM) and ProduXion Manager® (PM) makes it possible to automate the processing of APCs directly from within existing publisher workflows. Metadata from EM and PM collected during manuscript submission and acceptance, such as institutional and funder-based discounts and license requirements, is automatically transferred to RightsLink to create accurate price estimates for Authors. Publishers’ unique business rules are also taken into account. Once an article is accepted, EM can automatically trigger a payment due notice to RightsLink. Or, publishers can create a PM production task to trigger payment due. In either case, Authors arrange to pay APCs within the RightsLink system, which in turn notifies EM/PM with an updated payment status.
With RightsLink built directly within the publishing workflow, the collection and processing of APCs are more streamlined and efficient. This flexible solution supports full open access, hybrid open access and transformative agreement business models.

There is no charge from Aries for EM/PM users to utilize this functionality. Existing RightsLink customers can activate the integration and set up configuration settings, by contacting your Aries and Copyright Clearance Center account representatives.
