Sarah Duncan Powers, Managing Editor at the American Journal of Ophthalmologygave an informative presentation regarding the journal’s use of automated reference checking at EMUG 2009. She indicated that adoption of the system in 2006 was motivated by her board’s concern regarding erroneous or manufactured references. Historically the burden was on the reviewer to validate references. Sarah discussed the journal’s transition to automated reference checking and observed that: “3 years later, only a small percentage of revised papers come in with incorrect references, and of those, the majority are due to smaller errors. No article is accepted until all references have been accounted for by either the checker or the author.”
