Promote Publisher Brand Identity at ORCID Workflow Points
ORCID – the Open Research and Contributor ID – is an independent, not-for-profit organization that issues unique, persistent digital identifiers for scholarly researchers. This enables transparent and trustworthy connections between researchers, their contributors, and their affiliations as they engage in research, scholarship, and innovation. More than nine million ORCID iDs have been issued, and has been adopted by publishers, research funders, institutions, and technology providers within the industry. The integration of ORCID collection and validation within Editorial Manager® (EM) and ProduXion Manager® (PM), the leading peer review and production tracking systems, offers many benefits for publishers, Authors, Editors, and Reviewers. ORCID is applied at various workflow points, including user registration, user login, Author and Co-Author attribution, Reviewer recognition, and more.
As Aries Systems is a member of ORCID, the Editorial Manager name is shown by default at these integration points. However, if the publishing organization is also an ORCID member, the default can be modified to instead display the name of the journal, publisher, or society. This better demonstrates to Authors and Reviewers that they are interacting with – or responding to – an ORCID request or action directly from the organization, supporting clarity and transparency between the publisher/journal and their end-users. To enable the publisher’s institutional brand identity at these workflow points, the organization must provide their ORCID credentials to their Aries Account Coordinator for input into EM/PM.
Although journals do not need to be a member of ORCID to benefit from the integration, we highly encourage publishers and other organizations to consider joining. Users can connect their ORCID record to their EM/PM account from the Update My Information page at any time, and publishers can also proactively solicit ORCID iDs from users at configurable workflow stages. Aries’ long-standing partnership with ORCID, which is further elevated through ORCID’s Certified Service Provider (CSP) program, is designed to streamline targeted areas of workflow, support quality and accuracy of user metadata, and boost researcher activity and engagement.
